Favorite Music:
I really like music. To me life without music is like living life in black and white. Music colors life. It's pretty difficult for me to pick a genre I really like. I know what I don't like...country/western. That said, while I'm pretty open, I have to say rock from the 80s and 90s really moves me.

Can someone be a member of more than one church? Why Not?

Added a post Feb 19

Great question. Our church has faced that question a couple times over the past couple years. My conclusion from those experiences is that it is better to be committed and invested in one place th... Read More »

Last week in the Wall Street Journal, a group of Chinese Buddhist monks were profiled on the front page. They are unique because they are experts in the Kung Fu martial arts. It's not used by them ... Read More »

Daddy!

One of the joys of being a dad is hearing my four year old son get excited when I come home. When I walked in the house yesterday afternoon my son cried out, "Daddy!" with a big smile on his face and arms open wide. I called back, "Ethan!"

Is this my experience with prayer? Do I show up for my quiet time in the morning with expectation that the living God, our Abba, is there waiting for me? "Abba!" I might begin my prayer, and in divine graciousness our Abba calls back "Mike!" There is…

Umami--a taste beyond us.

Maybe you heard the story on NPR yesterday like I did about Umami. (If you didn't here's the link to listen to it online http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15819485). Here's the story...

For thousands of years since Democritus, Plato, and Aristotle, the commonly held belief is that human beings have four tastes: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Even in the 19th century scientists discovered taste buds on the tongue and confirmed that yes, Virginia…

St. Joseph non believer

OK, count me in as one of the people who buried a statue of St. Joseph in our front yard to help sell our home a few years ago. We did and incidently you must bury him upside down in the ground and say a special prayer. We were desperate. It had been on the market for months and we were to the point of trying anything legal, m…

Too Christian?

This past Sunday, a rather nice middle aged couple introduced themselves to me at our church. They have been attending worship with us for the past few weeks and have found our congregation to be quite good. After the initial "get to know you" questions I asked about their Christian background.

"We can from the Missouri Synod (one branch of the Lutheran church)."

"Really. Why did you leave the Missouri Synod" I asked rather curiously. Occasionally we get people from that part o…

Musicians

Last Friday night, my wife and I went to our first ever Howard Jones concert. Who is Howard Jones you may ask? If you're old enough, he was an 80s pop singer with hits like No One Is To Blame, What is Love, and Everlasting Love among others. Overall the music is upbeat, smart, and positive. While I would have never said in…
