I asked earlier about childhood memories and I told you I'll tell you more about why later. Sunday Stephen asked the teens to share their favorite childhood memories (some were very similar to yours). One thing that he said, stood out for me. He said that for most people, they felt that when they became a Christian, they had to be serious. That being a Christian was either boring or serious (yeah, we've actually hear…

Sometimes it seems to me that all possible paintings pre-exist on the blank canvas.
The choice of brush and colour
and the use of skill, decision, action and accident determines which one is revealed as the blankness that shrouds it is erased ...brushstroke by brushstroke.

It’s funny to me how back when I was a just a little-tike, my favorite Bible stories revolved around violence…David and Goliath…Samson killing hundreds of Philistines with a jaw-bone…ya know…stuff that makes little boys just run wild on the church playground destroying each other. Now that I’ve grown into the over-dramatic, much-too-sensitive, emo-boy that I now am, I’ve noticed that the stories th…

Worth thinking about what I wrote about back in January. Interesting to consider what happens when thoughts get committed in writing and then acted upon. Adventure sounds great and risk is good writing material. I find it then hard when the risks impact on others. For me to experience the uncertainty of the new and unknown is one thing. To involve others, even when it is their choice, feels a lot different. I like to encourage with positive words and optimistic forecasts but I feel nervous about…

"Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me...'" John 20:17a
Mary Magdalene was one of many disappointed folks that morning. She really thought that with Jesus, His movement, His way of thinking that
the 'kingdom' was at hand...all of this was going to bring significant
changes to Judea, the people of Israel, and for her personally. The
death of the Rabbi seemed to signal the end of the revolution. Maybe
hundreds of followers would have to figure out how to get back to l…

My grandma (Abuela Eva) died this past Friday, 21st of September 2007, she was 80 years old. Is an irreparable lost, she was, was, a very happy, sweet and loving person.
She had a heart attack Friday morning, and another one at the night.
She used to be in the hospital very often, because she was very sick
and she suffered from diabetes, high triglycerides and cholesterol, she
had no sight in one eye, and ear problems, not of hearing but something

Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian.” The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength YOU HAVE and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. So, while I've been here at the University of Miami, I have been trying to - as my pastor would say - leverage my position (aka "job") for the kingdom as best I can. Sometimes this works incredibly well with relatively little work (as is evident by the group that meets in our apartment on Sunday nights) and sometimes...it's a struggle.

Okay - not that this is a hobby of mine or anything. I'm actually pretty darn bad at self-promotion. Maybe it's the Southern in me (if you're from the South...you'll understand the spirit of that comment). Regardless, I always find it..odd...when I try and promote myself or something I've done that I think could be classified as "cool." Not that this stops me, mind you. I just find it awkward. When Jesus invited a motley crew of fisherman and tax collectors to follow Him, He invited them to follow Him and “become fishers of men” (Mt. 4:19).
It seems odd that He doesn’t invite them to follow Him so they can go to heaven, so He can meet their needs, or so He can teach them great things since these “benefits of following Christ” seem to be the
message most of our churches share.
Jesus does not invite us to follow Him for what we can get, but He invites us to follow Him f…

Today while doing my devotions, I came across a verse in Psalm 138: 1-3 which states: “ I will praise You with my whole heart; Before the gods I will sing praises to You. I have started to realise how easy it is to live a 'safe' life. I have a couple of shelves of biographies and I don't think any of those people have opted for safety. That is a very simple comparison. Safety and nothing to write about. Danger and a life worth recording. The heroes I read about didn't start out with any promises or any guarantee of success. In fact, many of them had influential people telling what they couldn't do. Lots of discouragement. They chose to risk failure and often a lo…

Jesus did not begin his ministry until after he had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. (Luke 3:21-23). Jesus himself explained how he operated “If I by the Spirit of God do cast out demons then has the Kingdom of God come upon you” (Matthew 12:28). He told us we could do the same. “Anyone one who believes in me will do what I have been doing – and greater things.”(John l:12). And he told us how it could be done. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). That powe…

Where is art in the Christian heart,
Is there only faith or is science a part?
Why discrete spaces inside our being,
Why separate our ways of thinking and seeing?
God’s people have feared what art can do
Thinking a picture, a sculpture – taboo!
Some even will go so far as to say:
All your instruments, put them away!
Somehow we believed that reason is king
No more sensing, perceiving, or even feeling
Keep your feet on the ground, is said to the young man…

One of the joys of being a dad is hearing my four year old son get excited when I come home. When I walked in the house yesterday afternoon my son cried out, "Daddy!" with a big smile on his face and arms open wide. I called back, "Ethan!"
Is this my experience with prayer? Do I show up for my quiet time in the morning with expectation that the living God, our Abba, is there waiting for me? "Abba!" I might begin my prayer, and in divine graciousness our Abba calls back "Mike!" There is…

If we were created with the inherent intent to have fellowship with our creator – and if we are not living up to this expectation – then I guess the question I pose is who or what is being put in this God shaped space? We did and incidently you must bury him upside down in the ground and say a special prayer. We were desperate. It had been on the market for months and we were to the point of trying anything legal, m…

Most of the philosophical questions that mankind ponders could be answered or refocused with the answer to this title. As with such a question there presently is no empirical evidence to provide concrete proof one way, or another. But, there is more than sufficient evidence to form concrete theories.
My own personal views are probably most closely held to the teleological persuasion, as being a graphic designer and new media developer…

Why would God go through all the trouble to create a universe billions of years old just to
create a planet that will gestate for millions of more years, to bear just the right
conditions to bring forth life? Why life and why man?
To recap from the last blog entry, a fractal metaphorical view was established to understand infinite dimensions with intimate ones and to perceive a glimpse of how God may operate. Fractals, which are math…

Debbie and I were saddened as we watched homes, a castle, and even a church burning in Malibu on the news yesterday. I have driven by this church and seen this castle many times over the years.

In all honesty I really think I might've torn
my rotator cuff playing the Wii. Don't laugh ... I'm not joking. We
got a Wii about a month ago and it came with the Sports Pack game with
bowling, baseball, golf, tennis, and boxing. It's the funnest game
system I've ever played and beyond addicting.
The big idea with the Wii sports games is that they simulate motions from the real life sports. The controllers are wireless remotes and work through motion ... so when you play t

I heard a story this morning, which God used to gently convict my heart and gently remind me how fortunate I/ we really are to have all of the liberties that America has to offer. Yet, even though we live in the land of opportunity, we still see so many unhappy and sometimes downright miserable people. But why? The worlds standard says having more equates to happiness – then in theory we should be happy. However, this…

The post title says it all.
Does anyone know if that should be "tonne" or "ton"? (The 2200 lb. variety, not the wimpy American ton which weighs less. I'm resisting saying, "sort of like a Canadian dollar vs. you know", but we're not at 1.10 yet, are we?
I'm not really all wrapped up in my work though, it's just a busy week followed by another busy week with the conference with Alex McManus scheduled on the Saturday in-between.

This past Sunday, a rather nice middle aged couple introduced themselves to me at our church. They have been attending worship with us for the past few weeks and have found our congregation to be quite good. After the initial "get to know you" questions I asked about their Christian background.
"We can from the Missouri Synod (one branch of the Lutheran church)."
"Really. Why did you leave the Missouri Synod" I asked rather curiously. Occasionally we get people from that part o…

As I still clean one of the rooms of the house (It is 1:38AM) I found one of my old journals. It was interesting to see what was going in my life at that time. As I read it it made me remember some of the conversations that God and I had, God has been faithful. I think that I will retake the journal again.

I picked up a magazine I don't usually read, "O." It's Oprah's magazine. It has some good things. But of anything I noticed, it, like many publications, is full of "causes." But I think they are safe causes. Causes that let people feel like they are involved but don't cause any discomfort to the person getting "involved."
On one page there is an article about how we can be more green, then on the next page there is an articles on new items you must have. (Like a set of teacups and sauc…

After 11 years I am finally free from the cubicle life....
I spent 10 years at a publishing company in Ventura and then at the beginning of this year I moved to Amgen. But, on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, I was given my freedom. I was one of the 1,500 who received 'the package'. I celebrated and rejoiced! But, many others were devistated by the news. So much of their life, career, hopes and dreams were tied up in that company.
The day after we all got the news, Amgen held a special…

Yesterday I saw a homeless woman. Her head was low and her eyes were downcast. She was just walking down the side of a very busy street near my home. Later I saw her again -- she was sitting on the curb. Her face low, her eyes downcast. What was she thinking? I decided if I saw her again I would stop and I wanted to be prepared so I bought some water and a few bananas at the store. In line at the grocery a woman came up short when paying. She had to put back popsicles -- they were $2.89. I as…
